About HEAVY DISCO

HEAVY DISCO was founded by Ashley Beedle, Dave Jarvis + Dieselover a decade ago. There was the first compilation album ‘The Trials and Tribulations of Heavy Disco’ in 2012 and the one-off parties have achieved ‘legendary nights’ status – too many to mention.

The Heavy Disco motto is simple – Remember, Heavy Makes You Happy.

ASHLEY BEEDLE • Black Science Orchestra • Ballistic Brothers • North Street Crew

Referenced in Daft Punk’s song as one of the ‘Teachers’, Ashley Beedle first began DJing during the 1980s and made a name for himself during the heyday of Acid House. In the early 1990s, he teamed up with Rob Mello and John Howard to form the first incarnation of the Black Science Orchestra, signed to the legendary dance label, Junior Boys Own. After releasing the seminal club classic ‘Where Were You?', BSO’s production unit morphed and evolved with Uschi Classen and Marc Woodford and tracks like 'Strong' and ‘Philadelphia' were released as well as the 1994 debut album 'Walter's Room' and deep house classic ‘New Jersey Deep’.

While working with the Black Science Orchestra, Ashley started another project known as The Ballistic Brothers with Dave Hill, Uschi Classen, Rocky & Diesel spawning the 'Ballistic Brothers vs The Eccentric Afros' Pt 1 & 2 EP plus 'Blacker' (a favourite of Prince’s) and the 1995 LP, 'London Hooligan Soul'. In 1997, the Ballistic Brothers released their second album, 'Rude System' while at the same time, Ashley was working on a multitude of projects including Black Jazz Chronicles, Roots Revolutions and Rising Sunz with Uschi Classen and Phil Asher.

Running parallel with the Ballistic Brothers, Ashley was a founding member of the group X-Press 2, with fellow DJs Rocky and Diesel performing on 6 decks and 3 CDJ players. They scored global dance chart action through the 90’s and 00’s with tracks such as 'Muzik Xpress', 'Say What' and 'London Xpress' and charted at #2 in the UK Top 40 with their global hit 'Lazy', their collaboration with Talking Heads' David Byrne which earnt Ashley an Ivor Novello award. X-Press 2 also released two albums, 'Muzikisum' and 'Makeshift Feelgood'.

From the late 90's onwards, Ashley continued to remix and produce, releasing the milestone 'Grass Roots' compilation in 1999 and between 2001 – 2003, Bent's 'Always' + ‘Magic Love’ and The Streets 'Weak Become Heroes' all received the Beedle remix treatment. Ashley’s remix of Elton John’s ‘Are You Ready For Love’ catapulted the song to No.1 in the UK Singles Chart. In 2005, Beedle remixed Bob Marley's 'Get Up, Stand Up' with Damian 'Junior Gong' Marley's 'Welcome to Jamrock' to create the mash-up 'Stand Up Jamrock (Ashley Beedle Remix)' which the Marley family loved so much they ended up including it on the Bob Marley compilation album 'Africa Unite: The Singles Collection'. The track went on to chart at #1 on the Jamaican National Charts.

Since 2015, Ashley has been working as part of the 'North Street' remix collective with North Street Studio One owner and musical genius, Darren Morris and Ramrock Records/F*CLR boss, Jo Wallace as well as solo remixes. In 2017, Ashley’s remixes of Stan Serkin’s ‘Save Me’ and Glenn Davis’ ‘Body & Soul’ reminded the international dance music community that he is a force majeure in the world of remixing and production and his remix of Mama’s ‘Unmask Me’ was voted the No.2 best single of 2017 by DJ History. 2018 already has a plethora of projects underway including Waterson’s debut album, an Afrikanz on Marz concept album, Glenn Davis’s ‘Body & Soul’ remix on F*CLR and the reunion of the legendary Black Science Orchestra – watch this space….

DAVE JARVIS • Love Vinyl • Faith • Moton Records Inc

Over the years, Dave has worked for the major players in the music industry - Sony, EMI, Ministry of Sound, Pinnacle and Demon to name but a few. Following on from the enormously successful joint compilation for Sony called HAPPY DAYS with Boy’s Own founder, Terry Farley, Dave has continued to release wonderful music for the past 20 years via his Moton label that he started with Diesel from X-press2. The latest release is The Divine Situation - Born Again which got the full 10/10 in DJ magazine and Mixmag.

In October 2015, Dave went back to his roots and became co-owner and director of Love Vinyl in Hoxton as well as starting a new vinyl imprint called The House of Love Vinyl with the first release of Eugene Record - Overdose of Joy - more milestone releases have followed. Dave’s signature DJ style embraces his love of everything eclectic – from his own personal edits to forgotten floor fillers as long as they fulfil the Heavy Disco motto – Remember, Heavy Makes You Happy…..and they will.

DIESEL • Moton Records Inc • Know-Wave Radio

Diesel’s career began in the halcyon days of the mid 80’s ‘Rare Groove’ era spinning tracks in West London bars and discos before finally getting his DJ break in ‘86 when Gilles Peterson added him to his support line-up to play straight-ahead jazz, Latin and soul. In 1988, Diesel was bitten by the House Music bug and together with friend and DJ partner Rocky, they became the dance scene’s first DJ duo, Rocky & Diesel.

The duo were regulars at Danny Rampling’s Shoom Club and inspired by the musical vibe, they soonbranched out with their eclectic sets and all things Balearic gaining major respect from DJ peers and the public alike. Their presence was requested at Terry Farley’s legendary Boys Own parties with Boy’s Own boss Terry Farley and Andrew Weatherall at the controls. From ‘89 until ’91, Rocky & Diesel ran their own Yellow Book club night at the Gardening Club in London’s Covent Garden. In 1992, Terry Farley invited Ashley Beedle to join the duo and named them X-press 2. Their subsequent releases on Junior Boys Own Records including ‘Muzik X-press’ are considered to be the bedrock of UK House Music which the trio took around the world. The 90s & 00s were a blur of guest spots and residencies at the most influential dance spots of the day, Ministry of Sound, Back to Basics, Cream and beyond - Ibiza, U.SA & South America, the Far East, Japan and Australasia. Working with David Byrne from ‘Talking Heads’ in 2002 propelled the trio onto Top of the Pops and into the global charts with their dance collaboration ‘Lazy’ which, to this day, remains in the nation’s psyche.

Other projects have included the Ballistic Brothers & Yellow Sox and Diesel currently runs Moton Records Inc. along with label partner, long-time friend + fellow Heavy Disco DJ, Dave Jarvis. Diesel can also be heard sporadically broadcasting on http://www.know-wave.com/
